Papers, 1864.

A diary kept by Johnston from May 4 to June 20, 1864, summarizes his regiment's participation in the Army of the Potomac's spring campaign from the Battle of the Wilderness in which his Colonel, Frank Graves, was killed, through the battles of Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Cold Harbor in which Major W. Ely Lewis was killed, and the Petersburg assault. In a letter to Sarah Ann Wicks, 1864 Oct. 23, near Poplar Grove Court House, Johnston writes about the weather, their camp, the anticipated end of the war, and their future together. With the diary and letter are copies of genealogical records of the Johnston family, and a poem "To the Gallant Eighth of Michigan" that mentions the death of Graves.
